UtilityEngineering Full Time Remote Friendly Travel

Position Overview

UtilityEngineering is seeking a Relay Technician to perform electrical testing on relays in electrical power stations. Responsibilities include using equipment such as the Manta 5100 to test various microprocessor-based relays within electrical substations. This role requires business travel over 50% of the time.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, commission, test, and maintain protective relaying equipment
  • Conduct functional testing of substation control circuits on relay panels, transformers, and circuit breakers
  • Develop relay macros and testing routines to confirm proper protection and control design
  • Perform end-to-end relay testing using test software; analyze relay behavior based on simulated fault conditions
  • Create written procedures for the commissioning, testing, and maintenance of protective relays
  • Review relay settings and logic equations to confirm that system operations meet design requirements
  • Redline electrical schematics and wiring diagrams as needed
  • Document test results, create equipment records, and compile reports on issues encountered

 

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience with installation, testing, maintenance, and repair of protective relays in transmission, generation, or distribution substations
  • Associate degree (2-year) in Substation Relaying and Maintenance
  • Proficient in developing relay test plans and procedures for protection systems across substations
  • Experienced in calibrating and functionally testing electromechanical and microprocessor-based relays
  • Skilled in troubleshooting distribution and transmission control circuits
  • Familiarity with relay test software; Manta 5100 experience preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Desired experience with installing and maintaining equipment such as circuit breakers, transformers, and switchgear
  • Ability to lead on-site testing, delegate tasks, and interface with clients
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting protection/control schematics and wiring diagrams, identifying errors, and ensuring compliance with standards
  • Capable of reviewing relay settings for consistency with design documentation, including CT/VT ratios and trip outputs
  • Able to interpret manufacturer documentation to facilitate accurate testing and commissioning

  • Pass a pre-employment drug screening
  • Complete a satisfactory criminal background check
  • Willingness to travel and work overtime as needed
  • Ability to climb ladders, lift up to 50 lbs, and stand for extended periods
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
